Welcome

Dear Visitor,

Welcome at the new web page of the Department!

The predecessor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, was established in 1950. Nowadays, the Department is one fo the largest in the Universisty of Debrecen, considering the size, teaching activities and research achievements. Currently 19 permanent university teachers, among them 1 full members of the Hungarian Academy of Science as well as 2 professors with Doctor of Science (DSC) degree belong to the Department. Further 12 scientists on research grants, 21 PhD students participate in the teaching and research activities. The work of the teachers and researchers is helped by 16 assistants and 8 administrative staff members.

The Department educates more than 1200 students/academic year, in a variety of faculties and programs. Among others we participate in the training of general medicine, dentistry students, as well as molecular biology and biotechnology MSc students training both in Hungarian and in English. Furthermore, we also provide Hungarian courses for the Clinical researcher MSc, and Biotechnology BSc students. Staff members of the Department  announce approximately 55 courses/academic year.

In agreement with the large size, the scientific fied spectrum studied at the Department is fairly broad. Six larger Research Laboratories, and further four independent Research Groups carry out the scientific research. Among other topics, researchers of the Department are studying the biochemical aspects and signaling pathways involved in cell death and phagocytosis, connections of viral infections and innate immunity, biochemistry of retroviruses, genetic and epigenetic regulation of gene transcription, biomarker validation as well as stem cell differentiation. The Department provieds a high quality research environment, even by international standards. The advanced level infrastucture is mostly organized into the four Core Facilities that support research groups of the Univeristy as well as outside academic and industrial partners.
