Welcome

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the website of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen.

Founded in 1950, our Department has more than 75 years of history and has grown into one of the largest and most distinguished academic units at the University of Debrecen. Today, we are proud to play a leading role in both education and biomedical research, combining a rich tradition with a strong commitment to innovation and scientific excellence.

Each year, more than 1,200 students from a wide range of academic programs complete coursework in our Department. Our faculty teach medical and dental students, as well as students enrolled in the Molecular Biology and Biotechnology M.Sc. programs, the Clinical Research M.Sc. program, and the Biotechnology B.Sc. program. Together, we offer approximately 55 courses annually in both English and Hungarian, providing students with a strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, and related disciplines while preparing the next generation of physicians, scientists, and biotechnology professionals.

Our research program is as diverse as it is dynamic. Six major research laboratories and four independent research groups investigate a broad spectrum of internationally recognized topics, including the molecular mechanisms of cell death, the regulation of phagocytosis, innate immunity and host–virus interactions, retroviral biochemistry, the genetic and epigenetic regulation of gene expression, and stem cell differentiation. By integrating cutting-edge genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and bioinformatics technologies, we address complex questions in systems biology and identify biomarkers that may improve disease diagnosis and advance precision medicine.

Our research is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and an outstanding research infrastructure that meets international standards. Our core laboratories and advanced instrumentation serve not only investigators within the Department but also numerous collaborators across the University of Debrecen and partner institutions in Hungary and around the world.

The Department is home to 19 faculty members, 15 research scientists, and 20 Ph.D. students. We are especially proud that our community includes two members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and several faculty members who have earned the prestigious Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (D.Sc.) degree, reflecting the high level of scholarship and scientific achievement within our Department. Their work is supported by 14 laboratory assistants and 6 administrative professionals whose expertise and dedication are essential to our teaching, research, and daily operations.

Whether you are a prospective student, a researcher seeking collaboration, an academic partner, or simply someone interested in the life sciences, we hope you will enjoy exploring our website. We invite you to learn more about our educational programs, discover our research, meet our faculty and students, and see how our Department contributes to advancing science, education, and human health.

Thank you for visiting our website. We look forward to welcoming you to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Debrecen.
